A 29-year-old body boarder was bitten by a shark on Wednesday morning in the area of Nīnole Bay, near the Punalu’u black sand beach in Ka’u on Hawaii Island. He was in 8 feet of water and approximately 20 yards off shore when the incident took place.
Friends who witnessed the event said it was a 10-12 foot long tiger shark. Thankfully the man has non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be release from the hospital after treatment.
DLNR Chairperson William J. Aila said in a media release “We are not sure why these bites are occurring more frequently than normal, especially around Maui,…It is our hope and expectation that numbers of incidents will return to a more normal range in the near future.”
